Today, marks a great opportunity to claim this prestigious name and reward for our college to do the right thing: go absolutely green. Skyline College works hard to recycle it's waste to meet state guidelines and we should be the first to be a paperless campus. Here are included ideas: Skyline College would cut paper waste 100%; Documents can be shared easily between Teachers and Students electronically by PDF, email, tweet or text; Electronic readers such as laptops, iPads and ebook readers would eliminate the need for expensive books and continuing new editions; Teachers can customize class aids with multimedia, internet resources, youtube and iTunes U; Counselors and tutors could easily follow the progress of students recommending classes to meet graduate requirements; the ability to bundle additional interactive learning activities to strengthen the students weak areas. Through good planning and the use of advanced smartphones and tablets, Skyline College can launch this pilot program as a example for other colleges. We should be the first college to go paperless, it is our future, it is our education.

At Skyline College, the cafeteria is the "heart of the campus." Students like to hang out, chat, and even study there. • Our main gathering place should be livelier: too many people are on their electronics instead of engaging with others in meaningful ways. • The atmosphere would be improved greatly with live music and poetry performance by students. WE PROPOSE: Creating an exciting OPEN MIC and MUSIC program once a month. • Students could sign up to perform. • Students or staff can bring their instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, etc) to play. • We can get an upright used piano for about $700. • We will partner with the departments of music, arts, and creative writing to recruit talents and create an exciting program. WHY: • Music and arts have the powerful effect of connecting people • Music relaxes people and reduces stress • Open Mic Program encourages students to discover their inner artists and provides creative outlets and performance opportunities.

Over the course of the Fall 2011 semester, the Skyline College Environmental Club brought the nationwide Take Back the Tap initiative into Skyline College. This student powered campus initiative is designed to promote the use of reusable canteens and wean students of our cultural addiction to plastic water bottles. In “Taking Back the Tap” at Skyline College we can raise awareness to students about the cause, while educating them of the pollution that goes into the production and distribution of plastic water bottles. The Skyline College Environmental Club would graciously accept grant aid for the installation of one Elkay model LZWSMDK hydration station in Building 6. The Elkay hydration station will provide the entire Skyline College Community with the accessibly to conveniently fill their reusable canteens. A Hydration Station is advantageous because it enables convenient access to free clean water for all students without harming the environment. This does not only reduce waste but consumption costs as well. In our hope to create a greener world, we are starting locally at Skyline College.

$6100 USD is just enough to construct an Earthship. An Earthship is a new type of Biotecture that provides sustenance and energy, and collects it's own water for multiple uses. More info on Earthships here (http://www.earthship.com) I propose we honor our Veterans on campus by creating a space for those among them who fall on hard times but still wish to study. This completely green structure will be created with up to 200 tires, and pay for itself in energy costs in three years. The Earthship does not require heating, even in the coldest campus mist. The Veterans Grant Biotecture would be awarded on a Semester basis by a scholarship process using the already existing Starz system. This living home will be a powerful example for Veterans retraining themselves in green technologies. Much of what we think of as 'necessary' in housing is the cultural refuse of static design from the 1950s. We have more advanced green technologies that can easily bypass what we think of as vital energy and water services. With land Skyline already owns, we can easily demonstrate a 2 week construction project of this entirely green biotecture process.

Like at city college they had extra; 1, microwaves with faster and higher voltage. 2, longer table 3, some bigger toasters. 4, a extra table and move the vending machine a bit more. 5. sanitary wipes made out of vinegar & no toxic fluids/alcohol added on the side wall. This would help the next person that needs to use the microwave, clean and wipe on whatever could of splattered in the previous dish, in case the person happen to make a mess, they are obligated to use the sanitary wipes and clean their mess after each and every use.

Similar to the ASSC office, I imagine a designated room/area where campus clubs could post detailed information/posters/pictures/etc, and that could also be easily accessed by students, to find out what is going on with all the clubs on campus in one place. *Each club would have their own case protected bulletin board *Small clubs could share a board *Located somwhere easily accessible & visible in building 6 Right now most clubs use social network pages pages, e-mail lists, the bulletin boards, and the TV screens. It can get daunting to try and piece together what is going on within each individual club with so many scattered info locations. Please help me by adding your thoughts to this very general idea I have.

This spring, several veterans and members of student government joined together to discuss the current state of the Veterans Resource Center on campus. The ASSC dedicated money for smaller items, such as a microwave, a printer, and a couch. However, we need a larger scale project to make a difference in the feel of this space. One of the key issues that came up was the size of the space and the ability to have a quiet study area where veterans will feel comfortable studying. The changes we are proposing is to get more dividers and establish larger boundaries for the current space of the VRC. We would also like to add more tables and chairs so that students can space out as they study. If possible, it would be good to have furniture that allows for electric plugs as there is a lack of available plugs in the current space. This is important because the veterans need to be supported on this campus. Our current resource center is drab and needs an upgrade. Aside from veterans and ASSC members, some administrators have been included in the conversation, and we hope that this could be a positive collaborative process. (Note: This is not an ASSC project; it's just lead by some ASSC members.)

What changes are you proposing? Raise student, parents, teacher, counselors, faculty awareness. Encourage AB540 students to pursue higher education. Provide support through scholarships. Develop brochures and fliers with info and resources. Why is it important to our community? Lack of knowledge in the community of issues surrounding AB540 students. Open opportunities to those who may feel they have none. Better prepare and educate students who will contribute to society. How can the change be made? By informing the community through presentations. Working together and networking with school educators, counselors, parents, and students. Distributing material with information contacts and resources. Provide scholarships to alleviate financial burden for AB540 students. Where will we begin? Contact schools faculty: to inform them of the project and share a proposal; set dates and prepare presentation. Create brochures and invite AB540 students to visit Skyline College. Once at Skyline, connect them to counseling, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities. Who is involve? SAFER and other clubs. Counselors, teachers, faculty, and staff. Financial aid.
